Blairs Museum

Blairs Museum have been in touch and would like to call out to North East Artists...

Recently restored portrait of the young Bonnie Prince Charlie

We are already entered for the NEOS 2011 but would like to put out a call to
all artists that we are actually available as a venue for exhibitions all
year round as opposed to just that week. We welcome artists working with
different types of media, only mindful of the fact that as a Catholic
organisation it could not conflict with their policies. Previously, we have
had photographers, watercolourists and textile designers who use a large
display area at the back of a beautiful and ornate church. We are out of the
way (4 miles out on the South Deeside Road) but enjoy scenic and peaceful
surroundings.

Mary Queen of Scots costumes

We don't ask for a percentage of any sales, only a donation of a piece of
artwork which we can include in our annual raffle to raise money to keep the
museum open. As the curator is present all year round, weekdays between 0900
and 1500, the artist does not need to be 'in residence'. However, we would
welcome talks/working practice wherever possible.

Please contact Vikki Duncan, curator, on 01224 863767.

Contributions are invited for a photographic installation/exhibition

Contributions are invited for a photographic installation/exhibition in The Lang Byre Gallery in may 2011.

The Redsuit Project was conceived in 2009 and presented initially in 2010 at Left Bank Gallery in Tarland, Aberdeenshire by artist Janet McEwan, who asked a number of people, including amateur photographers and professional artists, to take a disposable red coverall and photograph it in a place of their choice.

The performative, playful and poetic images taken in places near and far, encourage us to reconsider where and how we position ourselves within the worlds around us.

The project is now calling for more participants: to respond to the Redsuit theme, and help create an evocative group artwork which will be installed in the Lang Byre Gallery throughout May.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

  1. Get your redsuit!
Red coveralls can be purchased from the Woodend Barn reception desk for £5, or by contacting the project email address below, to arrange a postal delivery.
  2. Take a photograph featuring a redsuit.
If the red coverall is worn as a ‘costume’, the identity of the wearer must be concealed, e.g. photographed from the rear. The redsuit can also be placed as an object, within the photograph: e.g. see lower image on left. The image should be landscape format. A short accompanying text is requested, but is not essential.
  3. Send your image(s).
Please email a high-resolution digital copy (at least 300dpi) to redsuitproject@yahoo.co.uk. You can send up to 5 images. There is no entry fee. Janet McEwan will be responsible for selection, printing and presentation of all images. All print costs will be covered by the project. Prints will not be for sale unless with prior agreement with the photographer.
  4. Come to the exhibition preview on May 1st!
All participants will be invited to the exhibition private view.

KEY DATES

Mon. 18th April – Final date for receiving images.

Sun. 1st May – Exhibition Preview 6pm – 8pm.

Thurs 26th May – Last day of exhibition

Looking For Artists to Paint Portraits

I am an artist based in Glasgow and have been commissioned through Aberdeen City Council to undertake a public art project in the East Green area of the city.

I have a designated area to work in (around the indoor market, historic area between Union Street & railway station - including Hadden St, Carmelite St etc). My project is part of a wider evaluation into how people can participate in art and what role that could play in the regeneration of an area. I am responding to the designated project area and the community in and around it and through this experience I am going to make an art work to be finished by late February. What I want to do is find people to collaborate, to be part of making something and in the process they themselves become part of.

I work in various ways, with photography, video and music so I see the finished outcome perhaps being an event which will take place, perhaps with a musical performance (not quite sure yet). But I see the portrait idea as the starting point of what ever the work becomes. It will be a fundamental part of the overall work, which is going to depend on who I meet and work with along the way. I am interested in stories and finding ways to share these and document people's everyday lives.

By finding willing artists, not only will we then be able to work as a group to engage with the community around us but we can also get to know each other and share our own ideas/ stories.

The portraits themselves may be used to make a series of postcards or posters as part the project. I like the idea of different people being interpreted by different artists, building up a picture of people in the community, not only those whose image is used but the marks made by the person who has created that image.

If you are interested, please email Amy Marletta at amymarletta@hotmail.com

Please help support Platform 22

As many of you will know Platform 22 Gallery has been a NEOS venue since opening in 2005. In that time we have out grown the existing building and we are now planning a new and improved facility with dedicated gallery, studio, workshop and coffee shop areas.

The planning application has been rumbling on since June last year, but we are at last nearing some sort of conclusion. To help the project across the finishing line we would very much appreciate if any of our supporters could take a moment to post a message of support with Aberdeenshire Council by the 28th of February 2010 at www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/planning/apps/detail.asp?ref_no=APP/2010/0257

Platform 22 has always tried to support local artists and makers, and we hope that the new building will allow us to continue and develop this.

Many thanks for your help.

Platform 22's Christmas Market

On Saturday 5th December 10am to 2pm we are holding our second Christmas Market. Outside the gallery in the courtyard we have a great mix of stalls selling everything from Christmas wreaths, handmade soaps and chocolates to basketry, art prints and calendars. Additionally there will be a Traidcraft stall and the opportunity to have a quick (5 minute) portrait by local artist Deirdre Varley or a relaxing massage by Anna Rochester.

Torphins Primary School's PTA will be magically transforming Emma Pattullo's studio into a "winter grotto" for the arrival of a special guest, Santa! He is of course a VERY busy man just now and we are thrilled he is coming to join us between 10:30 am and 2 pm along with his happy helper elves!

In the gallery our Christmas Exhibition is showcaseing work by wildlife artist George Perkynson, wood work by Duncan Andrew and Robert Paterson, jewellery by Pip Will, wire work by Sandra Gorrora, glassware by Scandiscot and ceramics by Crazy Chix and Emma Pattullo.

Fingers crossed for good weather! However, just in case it might be cold we will be serving warming mulled apple cup to keep you warm while you check out the goodies on offer. Platform 22 also has a new cinnamon flavour of our popular Choc-o-Lait hot chocolate and this will be available, along with the usual teas and coffees, from the coffee house. We look forward to seeing you!
