Pushing Out The Boat - Call for Submissions

Issue 9: Call for Submissions

Submissions of writing and artwork are invited for Issue 9 of Pushing Out the Boat, North-East Scotland's acclaimed magazine of prose, poetry and visual arts. Issue 9 will be published in Summer 2010, with an online version to follow in 2011.

WRITING: Poetry, fiction and playscript may be submitted; work may be in English, Doric or Scots and must not have been accepted for publication elsewhere. Due to limited space, shorter works are preferable — although we may accept longer items (including self-contained extracts) up to 3,500 words. See Guidelines for further advice. Please send up to four poems to poetry@pushingouttheboat.co.uk, and up to two prose/playscript pieces to prose@pushingouttheboat.co.uk. Submissions should be emailed as separate MS Word or RTF attachments. Each category of submission should be accompanied by an email cover note, detailing contributor name; postal address; email address; phone number; age if under 18; and the title of each attached piece. The submission attachment(s) should show only the title of the piece, page numbering (if appropriate) and word count.

ARTWORK: A maximum of four images (colour and/or black-and-white) of 2- or 3-dimensional work — including line drawings, illustrations, &c. — should be emailed as separate attachments (max 2MB total), to art@pushingouttheboat.co.uk, accompanied by an email cover note with contributor name; postal address; email address; phone number; and, for each attached piece, the title, medium/materials and colour/black-and-white.

ALL SUBMISSIONS: To ensure blind selection, no contributor name should appear on any attached submission. Please do not send multiple copies, which overload our mailboxes — receipt of submissions will be acknowledged by return. Please do not send any other communication to these email addresses. Any queries should be addressed to info@pushingouttheboat.co.uk.

Final date for submissions is 1 October 2009, but earlier entries are especially appreciated.

Acceptance of contributions will be emailed by 31 January 2010. Please note that due to limited resources we are unable to notify rejections or to enter into correspondence regarding selection.

Successful entrants will receive a copy of the magazine and an invitation to read or display their work at the launch event to be held in Summer 2010.

Craft Makers Award: Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire Council has established the ‘Craft Makers Award: Aberdeenshire' in partnership with the Scottish Arts Council to support local makers in their creative development and encourage innovative professional practice.
If you are a craft maker living in Aberdeenshire and want to explore new ways of working, gain new skills or improve your professional practice then this award scheme may be able to assist you. The priority of the fund is to support quality projects and training opportunities for makers active in all forms of contemporary crafts.

The new scheme adheres to the Scottish Arts Council definition of crafts and is principally concerned with contemporary creative work conceived, designed and made by individual practitioners in ceramics, furniture and wood, glass, jewellery and metalwork, lettering, musical instruments, textiles and basket-making.

Awards of up to £1,000 are available and the total budget for the period 2009/2010 is £6,000.
The deadline for applications is Thursday 5 August 2009 and Thursday 14 October 2009.
Submissions will be assessed by a panel of experts who will consider a range of factors including the quality of the applicant’s work, the likely benefit that will be gained, the clarity of the submission, value for money and the quality of information supporting the application.

The Awards Panel will meet within three weeks of the deadline date and applicants will receive notification of its decision by the end of August and October 2009 respectively.

Thank you - networking night attendees

We just wanted to thank everyone who came to the Networking night tonight (Tuesday 4th August) - it was a pleasure to see so many positive, energetic people discussing their Open Studios "ideas"...

We had a fantastic show n tell from the Spring Fling's Adam & Amanda - some amazing stories of how Artists, Makers and Galleries are using the Spring Fling to test and try out new projects and ways of interacting with new audiences (and sustaining them!). Emma Pattullo and Madge Wards gave some excellent insights and stories as to how their NEOS experiences have shaped their approach to making work and showing / interacting with their audiences.

A big thanks to Philip Thompson (Creative Cultures Scotland) and Helen Voce (Cultural Enterprise Office) for facilitating a wonderfully social event.

NEOS Co-op Postcard Offer

NEOS would like to offer you an opportunity to get 1000 full colour (one sided) postcards printed as a co-op print run. We have been offerd by J Thomson (The printers of this years NEOS booklet) the facility to get 64 A6 cards printed on one sheet of 350gsm silk card...
This means we are looking for multiples of 64 individual A6 card designs...NEOS are willing to offer the print & set up of a simple card based on your entry image, name and phone / email / web address...for £30.

If you are interested in having one (or more) cards printed - Philip Thompson (NEOS catalogue designer) will collate & set up the print document. He will be looking to take confirmation & payment before the 10th of August - in order that the print document can be set up and sent to the printers so you can have plenty of time to use your postcard(s) before NEOS begins. (Pick up of cards will be arranged once we have the numbers!)

Here is an example of the basic set up of Image + info.

If you have print ready (CMYK, 300dpi A6) artwork ready - Phil can set this up for inclusion too...

If you are interested, or require more information, please email phil@g-r-a.co.uk
